Specialized care for
Craniosynostosis
Craniosynostosis can cause an abnormal head shape and increased pressure inside the head. There are several types or classifications of craniosynostosis, each depending on which sutures are affected. Each type of craniosynostosis may present with its own set of characteristic skull deformities, and treatment approaches can vary depending on the affected sutures and the severity of the condition.
Sagittal Craniosynostosis
Sagittal Craniosynostosis
The sagittal suture runs along the top of the head from front to back. Premature fusion of this suture leads to a long, narrow skull shape, known as scaphocephaly.
Coronal Craniosynostosis
Coronal Craniosynostosis
The coronal sutures run from ear to ear on the top of the head. Fusion of these sutures can cause one side of the forehead to flatten and the forehead to tilt forward on the affected side.
Metopic Craniosynostosis
Metopic Craniosynostosis
The metopic suture is in the front of the skull and runs from the top of the head to the nose. Fusion of this suture can cause a triangular-shaped forehead.
Lambdoid Craniosynostosis
Lambdoid Craniosynostosis
The lambdoid sutures are located at the back of the skull. Premature fusion of these sutures can result in flattening of the back of the head.

Craniosynostosis Treatments in New Jersey
Early diagnosis is the key to treating craniosynostosis safely and most effectively. It is relatively rare, occurring in about 1 in every 2,500 live births. Yet with as many as 50% of babies having some type of skull deformity, diagnosing craniosynostosis can be tricky and requires a carefully trained eye. When craniosynostosis is detected early, our preferred approach to treatment is an endoscopic strip craniectomy, a safe, highly effective, minimally invasive procedure.
Endoscopic Strip Craniectomy
Endoscopic Strip Craniectomy
This minimally invasive approach is typically used for infants under 3 months old. Small incisions allow visualization to identify and remove fused sutures hampering skull growth. The deformity then self-corrects as the baby grows over several months with guidance from a molding helmet. Benefits include smaller scars, fewer surgical risks, shorter hospitalization time, and high effectiveness. While the gradual correction extends the treatment timeline, we generally recommend the endoscopic approach — proven to be 99% effective — for most patients.
Cranial Vault Remodeling
Cranial Vault Remodeling
This traditional approach to treatment is a surgery that involves directly reshaping the cranium in older babies ages 7-9 months through incisions exposing the top of the head. Portions of skull bone are removed, recontoured, then reattached with plates/screws for immediate correction within a single operation without helmets post-operatively. While this achieves the fastest, most definitive results, traditional remodeling has more significant upfront risks, requiring longer procedures and recovery periods in the hospital. The larger scar is also permanently visible.
